Electric City Car

A team of researchers at the MIT’s media lab are busy developing a prototype of lightweight stackable electric cars that could help overcome the congestion problem. The prototype vehicle dubbed the City Car could be folded and stacked at central sites.

The City Car will be powered by a robotic drive system transformed from the lowly wheel. Each wheel will integrate an electric motor, steering and braking machinery, suspension, and digital controls. All these would be merged into sealed entities that could be snapped on and off.

The City Car will start at the mere press of a button and will boast a handlebar instead of a steering wheel. Lightweight material like Kevlar or carbon fiber will make the body of the car. The notion of the City Car was devised as part of a strategy for plummeting carbon emissions.

To my surprise, this awesome desk is only $379, which is manageable into most moderate budgets. The only problem is that you might feel more inclined to get a more comfortable office chair, to feel like a king in your new gaming thrown.

BenQ's Aries2

BenQ announced its Aries2 MID (Mobile Internet Device) will be available in European this quarter. It just won the Bronze Award in the Interactive Product Experiences category at the IDEA (Industrial Design Excellence Award), and will be powered by an Intel Atom 800 MHz with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of SSD.

It will feature a 4.8" Touchscreen in WXGA resolution (800x480), supports HSDPA connectivity, and WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0. No word on price.

Taipei, July 28, 2008 (CENS)--BenQ Corp., a leading information technology (IT) vendor in Taiwan, recently announced that its MID (mobile Internet device) Aries2 won the Bronze Award in the Interactive Product Experiences category at the 2008 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) held in the United States.

BenQ also claimed that the new MID model would be launched in Europe this quarter.

After giving up its Siemens cellphone business division, BenQ has been gradually turning its focus on development of mobile Internet- and communication-related products for the upscale market, though cellphone sales still continue in Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

IDEA is one of the world`s most influential design competitions. The program is the premier international competition honoring design excellence in products, eco-design, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts. Entries are invited from designers, students and companies worldwide.

According to BenQ, the MID Aries2 brings a new level of convenience to Internet users. Its ultra-light weight makes it highly mobile, but the challenges of designing for (and using) a small screen were overcome through smart interactive design. By simply shaking the device, all open windows can be displayed and accessed. Flip the device vertically or horizontally and use the finger or a stylus to type, zoom and control the interface. Web browsing, viewing pictures and reading documents can be operated with the flick of a finger.

Manfred Wang, chief design office of BenQ`s lifestyle design center, pointed out that his center`s biggest challenge is to merge cold high-technologies with familiar and interesting operation modes. In the future, he added, his center would continue to observe consumer lifestyles to create user-friendly technologies to further reveal BenQ`s brand spirit.

France planning to 'triple' CCTV surveillance capacity

At least those residing in the UK can breathe a momentary sigh of relief, as it's not the only locale where the amount of surveillance drones is quickly approaching the number of citizens. Reportedly, French interior minister Michele Alliot-Marie recently announced that the government is planning to "triple" the existing CCTV surveillance capacities across the country, "with a view to curb the risks of terrorism and acts of violence." Beyond just bumping the amount of eyes scanning for troublemakers, she also suggested that the network of systems be more tightly connected in order to effectively "protect the French people and enable them to move freely without fearing for their lives or property." Of course, we're sure there's quite a few citizens who'd have beef with the whole "moving freely sans fear" tidbit, no?

Unfortunately, the status quo of sub-$30 or so for a Brando gizmo has been shattered by this one, but if you're a worldwide traveler looking for portable (and renewable) power, $69 still ain't too bad.

ZAP announces mysterious high-performance electric car

ZAP (which stands for Zero Air Pollution) announced another new entry to its electric car stable, an as-yet-unnamed sedan that will apparently sell for $30,000. The California based company claims their new model will reach a top speed of 100 mph, and will have a 100-mile range between charges. But here's where this story gets really interesting: ZAP announced a different model back in January which still hasn't seen the light of day, and AutoblogGreen questions whether the company has been using press releases as a method of increasing their stock price for short term cash-flow. Competitors like Tesla have prototypes on the road, but no such luck with ZAP, which certainly raises a number of questions, and definitely gets you thinking about the word vaporware.

Minox debuts waterproof DC 6033 WP, slim DC 7022

Next time you're "under the sea" and want to try and snap some photos of Flounder, Scuttle or Sebastian, you'll be all set thanks to Minox and its DC 6033 WP watertight camera (pictured above). The 6 megapixel, waterproof (to ten meters) camera features a MINOCTAR fixed lens, SD card support, and 16MB of onboard flash memory.

For those of you remaining on dry land, Minox offers the DC 7022, a 7 megapixel camera with 4x optical zoom and an extra large 3-inch TFT screen. The 7022 is sized along the lines of a Canon Digital Elph, in that it's small enough to keep in your pocket, and features ISO settings from 50 to 1600, SD card support, and 32MB of flash memory. Both cameras use PictBridge technology, allowing direct from camera printing, and have USB connectivity. No word yet on pricing or street date.

Judging by the button layout, it looks like this is a Korean-only gizmo for the time being, but those in Seoul can try to convince their kids that this is cooler than a PSP for a stiff ₩365,000 ($397).

Japan gets the PSP lite in three additional colors

Showing a little love for the home crowd, Sony announced today that in addition to the three "basic" colors of black, silver, and white, Japanese PSP fans will also be getting the PSP lite in three metallic pastel shades: Rose Pink, Lavender Purple, and, um, Blue. No word on if we'll ever see these officially make it Stateside, but seeing as the original PSP was unlocked, you can bet some eager graymarketer is getting ready to cash in.

PS. You know Sony should've given the new model an official name when even PSP Fanboy is calling it the "PSP lite."

LG FlatronWide L206WU USB monitor comes to North America

LG is announcing today that it's bringing the 20-inch FlatronWide L206WU USB-based monitor to North America. You may have seen the display over at our sister site Engadget Chinese, where you can also check on the specs: in case you don't know Chinese, the L206WU is based around a Samsung SyncMaster 940UX and has a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, 170 degree horizontal / vertical viewing angles, and most importantly eschews DVI and VGA for a USB connection that can be daisy chained over five more displays. Other USB-based display options have generally included some form of built-in lag due to the restrictions of the USB connection, so it'll be interesting to see whether LG and its partner DisplayLink have managed to provide a solution. Price and availability dates are yet to be announced.

NEC spruces up LaVie laptops with 3D paint job

NEC's LaVie laptops haven't exactly been relying on their looks to get noticed, but the company seems to be trying to change that, recently introducing a new "3D" paint job option for those wanting to stand out in a crowd. According to The Register, the laptops make use of a special metallic paint which, "when surrounded by a magnetic field," magically displays a "hologram-style" pattern.

Otherwise, the laptops appear to be thoroughly ordinary, boasting a 15.4-inch display and your choice of AMD Sempron or Turion 64 X2 processors. Not surprisingly, they're also only available in Japan, where they apparently start around the $860 mark
